So Long... and Thanks for All the Fish (Adios... y Gracias por todo el Pescado!)

I was fortunate enough, after completing my Camino, to have an additional week in Galicia. On Saturday, August 25th, I also had the special honor to attend the wedding of a close friend and the man who introduced me to the Camino back in 2004, Andy Noverr. I spent my time in the sea-side village of Cedeira where the local past time is the eating of really great seafood. It was a tough way to spend my time, but after a month of hiking I didn’t argue with the prospect of spending my days drinking beer and eating some of the best fish I’ve ever had.

Estaba yo muy afortunado en tener, después de terminar el Camino, otra semana en Galicia. También, en el día 25 de Agosto, tenía yo el honor especial de asistir a la boda de un buen amigo y el hombre que me llevó al Camino por primera vez en 2004: Andy Noverr. Pasé el tiempo en un pueblo al lado del mar, Cedeira, donde el pasatiempo típico es comer muy buen marisco. Era difícil comer tanto, pero después de un mes entero de caminar no me iba a quejar de pasar los días tomando cerveza y desfrutando del mejor pescado que jamás había probado.


This Camino was different than I ever could have expected. I must thank all the friends who helped take me from town to town; my family: Gerardo, Rafa, Cristina and Mario. Who knows where we will all go from here, but I can only hope that the Camino stays with us on our future paths. I also must thank the many pilgrims along the way who supported me, respected me, and shared their time with me. There are too many people to name every single person. Thank you also to Maria Jose and Pepe, for sharing their last days with me, and Jesus and Xavi for being the last pilgrims to go home. The three of us were the last to leave Santiago and we had the sad task of saying fare well to everyone else. And thank you for reading this blog. Over the course of the last month the comments I have received from those of you I know and even some people I do not have kept me writing.

Este Camino era diferente de lo que podría haberme imaginado. Tengo que darles las gracias a los amigos que me llevaban de un pueblo a otro: mi familia: Gerardo, Rafa, Cristina y Mario. No hay Quien sabe donde iremos desde ahora, pero espero que el Camino nos acompañe en todos los futuros viajes. Gracias, también, a todos los peregrinos a través del Camino que me apoyaban, me respetaban y compartían su tiempo conmigo. Será imposible nombrar a todos. Gracias a María José y Pepe por pasar sus últimos días conmigo y a Jesús y Xavi por estar, conmigo, los últimos peregrinos de dejar el Camino. Nosotros tres teníamos el triste trabajo de despedirnos de todos los demás. Y gracias por leer este blog. Durante el último mes, he los comentarios que he recibido de personas que conozco y también de personas desconocidas me han dado las fuerzas para seguir escribiendo.

Where do we go from here? ¿A donde vamos desde aquí?

I would like to turn my extensive notes into something larger; what that project might be I am not quite certain. A book? Could be. Several small articles? Most definitely. There were many events, conversations and incidents that could not be included in this blog due to a lack of time. There are also so many thoughts and feelings that take time to develop. AS I think and speak with my pilgrim friends, I am certain the most important of our memories will shine all the stronger and, over the course of weeks and months, we will begin to understand what it all meant. Or maybe not. But first, I have other writing projects I would like to finish. I am putting together a series of essays about my life and travels as a visually impaired person. The essays are sometimes serious, but mostly humorous examples of how disabilities don’t always need to be disabling. I am anxious to return to these essays, as I have been working on them over the course of the six months prior to leaving for the Camino.

Me gustaría hacer algo más grande con todos los apuntes que he tomado del Camino; lo que será no lo sé. ¿Un libro? Quizás. ¿Varios artículos más breves? Casi seguro. Había muchos eventos, conversaciones e incidencias que no pude contar en el blog gracias a la falta de tiempo. Hay también muchos pensamientos y sentamientos que toman su tiempo en desarrollarse. Mientras hablo con mis amigos peregrinos, es seguro que las memorias más importantes se volverán claras y distintas y, durante las semanas y los meses, empezaremos a comprender lo que nos ha significado el Camino. O quizás no. Pero, primero, tengo otro proyecto que quiero acabar. Estoy haciendo una seria de ensayos acerca de mi vida y viajes como una persona invidente. Algunos de los ensayos son más serios, pero la mayoría son ejemplos graciosos de cómo una discapacidad no siempre tiene que descapacitar.
