25-07-2012 Torres del Rio to Logroño

Lunch at a relatively normal hour. (2:30)? Can this be possible? What I wonder, though, is how the waitress couldn’t fall for the extravagant ways we were hitting on her. Paula, the beautiful Waitress from Logrono, people will seek her out for years to come. At least, that is what we told her. She even let me feel her elbow so that I could decide for myself if she was beautiful or not. Though, when my friends suggested she let me feel other parts, she became a little less helpful. She probably thought the table full of tipsy pilgrims was loud and abnoxious, but she played along just the same.

Our early start from Torres del Rio today—on the road at 7:00—made a huge difference in our energy. By 9:30 it was already hot enough to make us think longingly of water, cold showers and colder drinks. Just a mere half kilometer outside Logrono, Rafa and I stopped to buy cokes from a person selling them on the road. It was just too hot. 5 hours and 21 kilometers of small hills and valleys without a single shadow. Not a cloud in the sky, either. Manolo was hitting hard.

I spent the entire day walking with Rafa and discussing a number of topics, from politics (the number of politicians in spain, their wages, the futility of the protesting groups) to the mere fact that walking with a partner causes you to talk more. It’s hard to stay quiet and solo when someone is holding your elbow. Though Rafa and I started somewhere toward the back of the pack, we needed our time to get warmed up. By 11:30, we had our stride and weren’t going to stop. Blisters hurt more if you give your body a chance to feel them. So we powered on and passed first Mario then Christina.

We arrived in Logrono around 12:30. This was one of the first Spanish cities I ever visited back when I was 18 years old. I don’t remember much, but I also couldn’t speak Spanish then. We found a private hostel near a somewhat disreputable part of town and, after showering, headed out for lunch.
Our lunch, as I have discussed above, consisted in a lot of wine and laughter.

More to come on this post, running out of time for internet
